What is this? In order to get resources, you have to either Buy it off the trader or buy orders.. buy orders is prettty much the same thing on a trader. I needed leather for a quest and on the trader it was being sold for 5000 a unit on the trader. But the buy order was around 4400 so its not that much cheaper. Why can't we gather the resource ourselves and not having to spend gold to get it? I don't understand why its like this?

The difference is that if you place an order for the currently highest price, meaning your order gets processed first, you can talk to the headsman and do the work yourself. This way you get paid for the order you paid for and you can actually get the items for free. Which is quite useful if you only need a small amount for companion quests, etc.
You'd still need a sufficient amount of boar hides to turn into leather by refining an order at any Artisan.
