What is the efficience of skill training?

Is the skill experience rewarded related to either the total damage during one battle or the amount of kills during one battle?

Is there any upper limit of the experience rewarded during one battle?

For weapon skills, both the amount of damage and killing influence the skill xp gained.
Athletics/Riding seems to be based on damage, not sure if kills have any impact.
Leadership is merely based on kills.
