Is the game still grindy and impossible to get into?

That hasn't really changes. While we did have a double XP event with Halloween (and maybe again with Christmas?), Bannerlord Online was never meant for characters to reach everything as fast as in single player.
A bit faster wouldn't hurt, but clan bonus and companion bonus do help out.

I understand for a online mmo-like game for things to be slower, but I remember weapons costing ridiculous amounts and troops being a pain to level up, the experience ended up feeling like a chore. I love the idea of the project and why I bothered making a post asking but it's not fun to get into.
Training troops isn't all that bad depending on hoe you approach it. Each troop (i.e. Imperial Recruit) shares the XP with troops that are the same. So the best approach is to wait until they're all ready to be promoted instead of doing it as soon as a promotion is available.
Companions can help a lot with the speed on that.
As for prices on the market, that's all player driven, so can't influence that.
