How to use Formations

Bannerlord Online uses the old formation system that was used in single player prior to beta version 1.7.0. All troops are already assigned to a formation by default, as seen in the list below. This means Formations 5 until 8 are unused and free for you to assign troops to that you want to be able to command seperately.

What are FormationsFormation.PNG
- Formations allows the player to assign specific troops and companions to specific formations. By default, the below formations exist, of which only formations 1 to 4 are used by troops in Bannerlord Online.
  1. Infantry (Shield Infantry + Shock Troops + Skirmishers)
  2. Archers (Archers + Crossbow units)
  3. Cavalry
  4. Horse Archers
  5. Skirmishers
  6. Heavy Infantry
  7. Light cavalry
  8. Heavy Cavalry
How to assign Formations
Formations can be assigned from the Party menu and by selecting the troop you wish to change formation for. Then click on the numbered Banner icon and select the desired Formation from the drop down menu.
How to command troops
While Bannerlord Online may not have all the options available in single player, the system works in the same way. Each formation is assigned to a corresponding number keys (1 - 8).
For example, when in battle press 1 to select all units assigned to the formation of Infantry. This will prompt more options on the screen to control the formation, such as F1 to move the troops to the position selected with your mouse, or F3 to Charge your troops at the enemy.1698680393623.png

What benefit does this have
Effectively this allows you to organise your troops in different ways during the battle. If you have mixed ranged troops, for example Imperial Palatine Guard and Imperial Sergeant Crossbowman, you could choose to assign the Crossbowman to formation 5, which would let you position both ranged units in different locations of the map and shoot and the incoming enemy from multiple sides.
In the end, you'll have to experiment a little bit yourself for which combat commands you find most suitable for your units and which strategies you could apply to different enemies. But hopefully this will get you started a bit and also help you assign companions to the appropriate formation depending on the gear you give them.
