William Marshal has come of age

Simple question (I think). Can I play as a member of another player's clan/army to begin as a simple foot soldier, rise through the ranks and (here's the kicker) at some point leave to start my own Clan?

If the answer is yes, then, can I play as peasant for an indefinite period - to earn the cash to equip and train myself well - before joining a clan?

Last question, and the one that make me think the answer to the above are "No": How does it work when my clan wants to war but I'm busy playing My LIttle Pony? Do I get slapped with an AWOL charge or what?

Thanks.

In a sense, yes. You can play as part of another players clan (clans only exist out of players afterall) until you feel ready to form your own clan. At which point you could choose to ally them or war them, or neither.

As for wars, the summer update will bring changes there that haven't been fully defined yet. But for PvP clans, they can be declared upon at any time, even if you're offline. But spmeone hasnto be only to be a victim of a battle.
