Steam version.

My friend and I downloaded bannerlord via game pass and downloaded the online mode. It wants the steam version, but we downloaded the game from gamepass and we don't have it on steam, what can we do, why is this? Isn't it ridiculous?

Linking account to steam was the only way to prevent one of the rules being broken (multiaccounting/RMT).
So the only thing you can do is buy the game on steam and play it via steam.
