The problem is that they get easily stuck on a few enemies and get killed without problem. And I sent them in when most of my archers dezimated the enemy. And ofcouse I flank them every time.

I have made the same experience. I trained 20 vanguards and after the first fight against forest bandits I lost 5....

I think it would be a good idea to add friendly fire, so archers hit charging friendly units if not proper commanded. That would also risk own units if they circle around when they charge, because they can hit own units. Maybe it a good thing too, to raise the wage for them, but limiting is kind...
